Working with Birch Pro was a truly pleasant experience. This new brand has strong roots in Birch accessories, backed by Colleen’s professional expertise.

I first met Colleen during my work with Verde Salon and had the chance to collaborate on Birch Accessories photoshoots back then — I really enjoyed that time. So jumping in as a Visual Designer for this project felt like a nice flashback because I already knew the environment and value behind Birch Accessories.

The Creative Journey

Packaging is like a book cover — it’s hard not to judge a product by it. As a Visual Designer, packaging design is one of my hidden hobbies. I’ve spent countless hours in shops just staring at packaging before buying anything. For me, it’s like study time, and I truly enjoy that part.

Our approach was simple: create a minimalistic design with stylists in mind, while emphasizing the professionalism of Birch Pro products. We started with the back panel.

Challenge

Create a packaging design that reflects the professionalism and quality of Birch Pro products, while keeping a minimalistic and stylistically appealing look that resonates with stylists.

Process

I presented Colleen with several drafts. She liked them but wasn’t quite sure which direction to take. Getting clear feedback is crucial for me, so after hearing her considerations, I understood the direction she wanted to pursue and presented new suggestions. She picked her favorite, and then we began refining the back panel.

Outcome

To create visual interest and reinforce branding, I split the back panel into two sections — black on top and grey on the bottom. On the grey section, I added a subtle pattern using the Birch name, gently connecting the design to the brand identity without overwhelming the look. A black strip between the two sections ties the design together smoothly, integrating perfectly with the top portion.

As a cherry on top, the stripe is decorated with the logo, which complements and balances the whole look.

This approach not only enhances the packaging’s aesthetic appeal but also strengthens brand recognition, making the product stand out on shelves while maintaining a professional and minimalistic feel.
